Maximo Laura has received many awards worldwide for his Peruvian hand-woven tapestries and his work has been featured in over 140 exhibitions in museums and galleries in 29 different countries since 1985. A self-taught textile artist he conducts workshops in traditional tapestry weaving and lectures on textile art. Most importantly for us, he is a wonderful designer and weaver of contemporary Andean wall tapestry art.
His tapestries are handwoven originals in alpaca wool, cotton and mixed fibres using his own techniques, each from an original design signed by Maximo Laura. They have a rod pocket so are ready to hang. Do view the close-up images showing some of the techniques which add to the three dimensional elements of these thick and full masterpieces. Each tapestry fuses contemporary and traditional elements in vibrant colours.
“The images of my work are born in my long walks and travels which stimulate my creative spirit, leading me to be near my encounter with vibrant and intense color, with elaborate and symbolic form, as well as with the refined technique of my tool: the loom. My work is nourished by symbols, stories, traditions, rituals, experiences, and by permanently returning to admire the iconography of ancestral Peruvian cultures. My search is a lyrical, spiritual and poetic language, product of this part of the continent and of this time.”
